Fire-rated doors are built of high-quality materials that can resist high temperatures for extended periods.

Most used fireproof doors are built of one or more of the following materials:

  • Steel: Steel is the most fire-resistant material. Steel doors are the preferable alternative for heat resistance due to their heavy-duty steel sheets and airtight seals. On the other hand, steel is usually the most expensive alternative and is not always the most aesthetically beautiful.
  • Timber: It may come as a surprise, but there is a wide selection of timber fireproof doors on the market. The timber is coated with a fire-resistant sealant to create a protective barrier. Wooden doors are less expensive than steel doors and typically appear more appealing.
  • Glass: Glass compounds, which are glass or ceramic glass bonded with steel or other metals to boost flame resistance, are also used for fireproofing. Glass can also complement the interior design of a building by making it lighter and brighter. The cost of a glass-composite door varies based on its style and composition.

Flame retardant doors are rated based on how long they can tolerate heat exposure. The ‘approved core thickness’ is the most critical factor in determining how long a fire-rated door will provide fire protection. A fire-resistant fixture should be fire-resistant for at least 30 minutes.

The following are the fire ratings for doors:

FD30 – fire door certified to provide 30 minutes of protection.

FD60 – 60 minutes of resistance

FD90 – 90 minutes

FD120 – 120 minutes.

Please explore your local building codes to identify the applicable fire door rating you need.
